A Digital Deception Cyber Fraud with an ISCCM-Associated Doctor

In today’s hyper-connected world, digital convenience often comes with unseen vulnerabilities. This case revolves around a renowned doctor from Lucknow who became a victim of an online impersonation scam. What began as a seemingly routine WhatsApp request from a trusted colleague turned into a case of digital fund theft. On December 8, 2024, a senior medical professional associated with ISCCM received an urgent WhatsApp message from a known contact, requesting ₹15,000 via UPI due to a temporary glitch in their payment app. Without a second thought, trusting the identity of the sender, the doctor transferred the amount instantly. What followed, however, exposed the dark side of digital impersonation and fraud. Shortly after the first transaction, another request came in, this time for ₹35,000. The unusual nature of the demand raised red flags. Cross-verification with colleagues revealed a shocking truth: the colleague’s WhatsApp account had been hacked. A digital con artist was on the other end.
